Projects
While in Sevagram, we will be working on three different projects:
mHealth (David)
The mHealth team is focused on identifying ways to diagnose and treat patients in limited resource settings. By spending time abroad, our goal is to learn first-hand from care providers about common ailments and diseases in Indonesia and India. Our hope is to decrease the gap between care providers and patients that currently lack access to healthcare. A secondary goal is to increase the dissemination of knowledge regarding treatment options for the sick or injured. The “m” refers to mobile, in the hope that our findings and subsequent work can be developed into a platform, which can be distributed throughout regions in a simple and easy way requiring minimal infrastructure and initial costs.
Other team members are Sriram, Brian, March, and Trent (in Kolkata, India) & Linda (in Jakarta, Indonesia).

Minimally Invasive Surgery (Kimber and Nikki)
In line with the Millennium Develop Goals (MGD), we are tackling global surgery and it's role in reducing in child mortality and maternal health. We are investigating high level issues, such as OR infrastructure, down to specific problems with equipment, training, and process. Our focus areas are:
-Task shifting in global surgery
-Deskilling minimally invasive surgery
-Improving surgical training
-Improving surgical safety
Preterm Health (Mihika)
Our team is focusing our efforts on developing interventions for improving health outcomes associated with preterm labor in low resource countries. Preterm birth is the second leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 and 15 million babies are born prematurely every year. Of these preterm babies, 1.1 million die from complications related to preterm birth. Our team is hoping to innovate to help the outcomes of the babies and mothers who are affected by preterm labor and delivery. During our month abroad, we hope to gain insights on how low resource countries handle preterm births to get a systems level understanding of how we can make the largest impact. Our observations will focus on understanding the biology, pathology, education, training, treatments, and pathways of the mothers, children, physicians in these countries.
The other team members include Aaron, Allie (who are in Nepal), Jackie, Melody, and Wes (who are in Indonesia).
